Welcome Winter!
More like an evergreen tree in the winter, not completely dormant, growth keeps happening just at a much slowed down rate.
Greetings Plant Friends and Fans!
Happy 2024.
This is our first newsletter of the new year, and although the gardens are closed until Mother's Day, many things are still going on.
We are debuting this newsletter on Substack which will be the way we continue to share information about what’s going on with a calendar of events, including classes, tours, open days, and garden events.

Want to come visit but live too far away?
Come stay at The Barnette located at the edge of the botanical gardens. More images available through the link. Mention you saw this in the newsletter for a discount.
Please consider supporting the work we are doing at Hortus Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. You can do that by donating through the website. But there are also other ways, including volunteering, and stock donations.
And now an even more unconventional, but extremely helpful way to support our work of creating a botanical garden/arboretum and the legacy of it being part of the heritage of Ulster County for the long-term future, as a place that not only nurtures visitors but cares for rare and endangered plants for the future.
I invite you to become a paying subscriber to the Hortus Gardens newsletter which will not only support the work that we do at the arboretum but will help build a community of like-minded plant nerds, enthusiasts and wanna-be’s. You will also help me shape the content of subscriber-only posts as I delve deeper into all the things that get me growing (and get you growing too)!
The best time to grow a tree was 10 years ago, the next best time is today, or after you have read this and I have inspired you to go get dirty.
The headline for this inaugural post is:
More like an evergreen tree in the winter, not completely dormant, growth keeps happening just at a much slowed down rate.
Our friend & 2024 intern is
who graciously made this short video of us that I recently posted on Instagram. I hope you enjoy. Jen does a cameo sipping Hazelmilk (as Scott & I are doing as well), and I am looking forward to sharing the video on Hazelmilk in a subsequent post.
